Former Okeene publisher, Martz, dies
Funeral services for Andrew C. Martz, 86, who died Wednesday, April 13, 1983 in an Okeene hospital were conducted Saturday; Apil 16 in the First Christian Church, Okeene, with Bob Cox officiating. Burial was in the Okeene Cemetery, with arrangements under the direction of the Sisson Funeral home, Okeene.
He was born Feb. 11, 1897 at Watonga, the son of Dennis J. and Sarah Margaret Hart Martz. his father had founded "The Watonga Rustler", Blaine County's first newspaper. Martz served in the US Army during World War I and after receiving his discharge in November 1918 he worked as a linotype operator at an Alva newspaper.
He and Maude Sunderland were married March 5, 1919 and on April 1 of that year he purchased, "The Okeene Record." Martz was owner and editor of the "Record" until 1972 when he sold it. Martz was a member of the Oklahoma Press Association for 63 years. He was a charter member and past commander of the American Legion Post 171, a member of the Chamber of Commerce and a charter member and past president of the Okeene Kiwanis Club. Martz was a 59 year member of the Masonic lodge and a deacon in the First Christian Church. He was on the board of education for 20 years, serving as president for several terms. Martz organized the Okeene Senior Citizens Club and served three years as its president.
Survivors are his wife, Maude, Okeene; two daughters, Andina M. Richardson, Oklahoma City, and Jeanne M. Gernert, Okeene; nine grandchildren, and 16 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sisters and six brothers.
