James joined the Union Army during the Civil War. He went home on leave to Tennesse and was captured by Confederate Army. The Union Army listed him as a deserter until Sherman’s march to the sea. He was found in Andersonville Prison, GA where he survived for about 18months. His military records then showed him as a prisoner of war. He only spoke of the prison camp once to his granddaughter, Opal Mitchell. He talked about not having enough to eat, and what they did have to eat was full of bugs. There was a line on the ground. Anyone crossing even an arm over the line was shot to death. As many were starving, some men would crawl to the line and start to cross just to end the suffering.
(KKP)
After the war James moved to Iowa away from the family home in Tennessee. It could be because he fought for the North and the family disowned him. It could be the political beliefs were not compatible with his family and moving west was the only answer for James.
James suffered a stroke and spent the last six years of his life in a wheelchair. He always tried to be a Southern gentleman at all times.

The name McGill is not common at all in Green/Lafayette, so finding the only marriage in that time frame, for a Lizzie L. McGill, found she is using the name Narcissus on the 1880 census. She also lists her birth as OH rather than Wisc, but records indicate she was actually born in Wisc, unless of course they took a trip back to visit kin. | Family: F06209
